Spiritual Life Sermon #1 Introduction to Spiritual Life Series

Introduction to Spiritual Life Series

Romans 8:13

The sermon begins with a prayer:

Okay, shall we pray. Dear Father, we thank you that you alone can draw us to yourself, so I trust You to do that with all of us, especially with me in these evening services. Lord I pray that you would draw us all into your own heart and you teach from your precious word. And dear Holy Spirit will you work in our consciences so that we are not great students on Sundays evening and bad obeyers during the week. Will You work in us so we actually obey through the week what we hear from You on Sunday? We ask this for Jesus' growth in our lives. Amen.

Loved ones, I would like to start again the series on the Spiritual Life and began tonight and go on through next three years on a spiritual life. I have a verse of scripture that we might look at that describes the spiritual life. It is Romans 8 and verse 13. "For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live." RSV

I think a lot of us here regard ourselves as Christians but we are virtually dead. I think there are a lot of ideological believers, people who believe that Jesus died for them and they themselves made surrender to him at some meeting or other. But they did not walk according to the Spirit or they did not live according to the Spirit and they are as good as dead! And depending on where you stand on eternal security, if you stand with me you say that they are really alive but they look like dead people. Or if you stand on the other side and you believe that there isn't an eternal security then you say they have died spiritually. But however it is, they have no living relationship with God.

Now that is one of the reasons I think we should deal in detail with the spiritual life and how to walk after the Spirit. I think a lot of you have deadness in your lives not because you were never born in the Spirit but because you don't walk after the Spirit. You stopped walking after the Spirit very soon after you received Jesus.

The spiritual life is a life that is lived by the rule and the direction of the Holy Spirit of the God. It's a moment-by-moment direction and rule and if you are not living that way you're probably dead as far as your relationship with God is concerned. There's another important verse that would tell you what we are about here on Sunday evening and why I am going to try to speak on the spiritual life yet again in another series. That verse is Genesis 2:9. "And out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil." RSV

There are two trees that you can eat from in order to try to have relationship with God. You can eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or you can eat from the tree of life. Let me share with you lest anyone here is thinking, "What again?" Do you know how often I have preached this series? This is my fifth time over eleven years. I've talked about these things for four times already taking three years each time to cover them. Now why do I do it again? Because I know that what I need is not knowledge. I understand them fairly well in my head. But I need life from the Holy Spirit. And what you need these Sunday evenings is not a better knowledge of these things. Loved ones, you need to pray that the Holy Spirit will prepare you and that he will speak to me and get me new light so that you will receive life. That's what you need to walk after the Spirit.

I understand it when some of you say, "Oh!! Sunday evenings again -- spirit, soul, and body -- No! I understand it all." But do you see that you are proving that you live by knowledge and that you think because you understand it you are in it. Loved ones, the greatest truth I saw about dear old saints was they could listen to a simple evangelistic sermon for sinners and they could come out filled with life from Jesus after it. It was then I began to realize that loved ones who are really alive in Jesus are seeking for life. They're not seeking for knowledge. And the people who go out of a service and say, "It's the same thing I heard before" are just trying to live off of increasing knowledge.

One of the reasons I decided to do this again this year was because I saw so many of us running around trying to get more knowledge. It is really interesting if you stand back from even a group like yourselves, it's very interesting to see us all swarm like little bees to the next honey pot that comes into Minneapolis-St Paul airport. It really is! A great Christian speaker or leader comes into the Twin Cities and we are off like a little swarm of bees. And really when you think of it, it must have something to do with the knowledge business because if it's the life business we know we can receive the same life from the same Jesus who is in that person in our own bedroom. But I see so many of us swarming after more and more knowledge. I see us buying yet another book.

I don't know if you've noticed the kind of books that are coming out now and that are preying upon all of us. They are “how to” books. I won't name them but they are all “how to” books even if "how" isn't in the title. The Christian world is filled with books on technique and method, really betting on the thirst for knowledge that so called "children of God" have.

Loved ones, we don't need more knowledge of good and evil. We don't need more ways of being saved apart from God's life. We need God's life. I would point out to you that the spiritual life is a quality of life or a level of life. It is not a technique or a method of keeping close to God. What we are eating from on these Sunday evenings is not the tree of knowledge. If it is, you are just going to be bored to tears and you had just better stop coming. But it's the tree of life. I know in my own life over these past eleven years, every time I have talked about these things Jesus has grown and grown in my own spirit. Just talking about these holy things of God enables the Holy Spirit to make them more and more real to you. So I ask you to come Sunday evenings, yearning and hungry for food and for life.

There are two kinds of people really that should not be here on Sunday evenings. You'll find the basis for those two groups in 1 Corinthians 2:13-14. "And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit. The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned."
RSV

Now there are two groups that should not be here on Sunday evening. The first is non-Christians. That's because the truths we're sharing are for those that are spiritually alive. They won't mean anything to loved ones who haven't committed their lives to Jesus and received his Spirit into them and allowed his Spirit to rule their lives. They won't understand them and stuff will come over as legalism. They'll just go from bad to worse. So loved ones I would encourage you not to bring non-Christian friends on Sunday evening. You should bring them on Sunday mornings. I feel there's a dearth, even in these Twin Cities, of deep teaching on the spiritual life. That's what we are going to involve ourselves in, in these services. So non-Christians should not be present.

The other kind of person that shouldn't be present is in verse 14. "The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the spirit of God." Some of you know what that Greek word is. It looks like PSYKIKOS. It is the soulish person.
That's the person who is looking for more knowledge. If you are just collecting deeper knowledge, so you somehow think that you'll grow in Jesus the more you understand the thing, then you shouldn't come. You won't get that kind of truth here. It'll be life, spiritual life to you. You need to come each Sunday evening not saying, "What is this guy going to tell me that I don't know? What new thing is he going to tell me? What new illustration is he going to use?" You need to come and say, "Lord Jesus, I’m coming to you for food and for water of life. I'm looking forward to receiving it from you.” If you come that way and pray for me then the Holy Spirit will feed us all. We'll grow together in Jesus. But will you really accept this? Don't you see that it is beyond any man? We are poor little creatures, poor little finite men and women. It is beyond any man to give you something deeper than what you have, least of all this preacher here. But Jesus can give us all food and water of life on these Sunday evenings. So I ask you to seriously think of all of that as we begin the study of the spiritual life.

Maybe you would notice that the basis of our studies will again and again be scripture and so I would just point out to you God's plan for our own personal lives and personalities. It's one that most of you know very well - a very famous verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:23. I would really ask those of you who know some of the facts to pray for the loved ones who don't know these facts and realize that there are some of us here this evening that actually have never seen this and don't yet know it. Pray that it will come home as new and fresh and real to them.

Here's the outline of the personality that God has given us in his word - 1 Thessalonians 5:23. "May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." God says we live on three levels. We have a spirit, and a soul and a body. Now that is called “trichotomy” for those of you that have done a little study in psychology or even philosophy.

That is called trichotomy because it is three. The normal distinction in secular psychology that is made is dichotomy - two. There is the visible body here and the invisible. The mind, or sometimes they say the spirit, meaning the mental part of us. Now, God says that there is a three-fold life within us. I don't know that it's a big deal to argue over spirit, soul and body or spirit and body. I don't know that it's important to argue two against three. It is important to see that you can live on three levels of life. Your life can be dictated by either the outside or the inside. I think in some ways it is important to make the Biblical distinction.

The Biblical distinction is that outside there is the body and inside that there is the soul, which is the psychological part of us. Then, inside the soul there is the spirit. One of the values I have seen of looking at our personalities as God does is that many loved ones have trouble with self-image. They have trouble with a good self-concept. And so often if they don't make a three-fold distinction and only think of the body and soul, they will try to correct that self-image or bad self-concept by juggling their thoughts around or by working on their feelings.

And often the poor self-image is the result of something being wrong inside in their spirit. It's a result of a wrong relationship between them and God. But they go to a psychiatrist or they go to a friend or a counselor and they try to work up good self-image and good thoughts. You'll find them often talking about themselves in these terms. They'll say "I don't love myself enough." And they get into all kinds of contortions trying to love themselves without loving themselves. They are trying to think of themselves as right and yet trying not to think of themselves too much. It is really an impossible task because the problem of a wrong self-image or self-concept is not in the soul. It is in fact in the spirit. But if you don't make that distinction you'll have real trouble continually with that.

If you don't make a distinction between spirit, soul and body you'll often come up against personal difficulties in your own life that you cannot solve and that you'll deal with on the wrong level.

I think we have seen difficulties in loved ones who are mentally disturbed and some of us are demon-casting mad. We cast out demons at the first glint of insanity and we're all for casting out a demon. Sometimes loved ones who are emotionally disturbed or mentally confused have problems in the soul. They have a disordered soul. They have a soul that has been so used to being dominated by the body that it is working the wrong way in all kinds of areas. What they need is for somebody to carefully and loving deal with each one of those areas. As the soul comes into order they themselves come into sanity and balance.

There are other loved ones who are willfully disobeying God and they are willfully entertaining a demon that brings error into their lives or brings some overwhelming lust into their lives. Their problem then is one that has to be dealt with by casting out the demon. But if you don't make a distinction between spirit and soul, often you can try to apply the same apparent solution to both cases and that's why many of us have seen a failure in those situations.

I think another problem you get into if you don't make a three-fold distinction (but think only of body and mind, emotions) is that you have real problems with the difference between faith and feeling. Because you say, "Yes, I live by faith and not by feeling" yet you keep on thinking "Isn't faith feeling God's presence? Isn't faith feeling the warm glow of God's love in my heart or feeling His joy as I pray to him?” If you don't make a distinction in what the spirit can perceive and what the soul can perceive and you don't know the difference you will never be able to make a distinction between faith and feeling.

So there are many reasons why it is important to accept God's outline of Biblical psychology. I would not fight to the death on spirit, soul and body. That's the terms. What I would fight to the death on is that whatever terms you use you do live on three levels. There are three levels of life that all of us experience and that is important to preserve the reality of those if we are going to make a distinction between spiritual healing and psychological healing, both of which are needed under God's guidance.

This is the outline that God gives of the personality. He says "May the spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus." I point out to you that that is a real prayer. God expects our spirits, souls and bodies to be healthy and to be blameless and to be in good shape. Only if all of them are in good shape can he really be fully glorified. It is his will in Jesus to bring all of them into order and into complete health. So that is the first point we need to be clear on: that God regards us as spirit and soul and body.

Now maybe it is good for you to see that you, yourself cannot make a distinction there (between the soul and spirit). You can't. Brothers and sisters you will become absolute, introspective nuts if you try to divide the soul from the spirit. That's where I think at times after evening service you ask me questions that cannot be answered. They are all around the level of trying to make a distinction "Am I doing this in my spirit, or am I doing this in my soul?"
Brothers and sisters, it will get you absolutely nowhere. You cannot make the distinction yourself between the spirit and soul.

The dear fellow [Watchman Nee] that is an older brother to us just puts it very strongly in his introduction to this whole thing. He talks about the whole difficulty that comes about when you begin to look inward. It is of the utmost importance that we never try to analyze ourselves. "Upon reading such a treatise as this we may quite unconsciously become overactive in self analysis. In observing the condition of our inward life we tend to overanalyze our thoughts and feelings and the movements of the inner man. This may result in much apparent progress, yet actually renders treatment of the self-life much more difficult. If we persistently turn within ourselves we shall lose our peace completely. We shall soon discover the discrepancy that exists between our expectation and our actual condition. We expect to be filled with holiness but we are found wanting in holiness. This makes us uncomfortable. God never asks us to be so introspective. To do so constitutes one of the main reasons for spiritual stagnation. Our rest lies in looking to the Lord, not to ourselves. In the degree that we look off unto him, to that degree are we delivered from self. We rest on the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ and not on our own shifting experience. True spiritual life depends not on probing our feelings and thoughts from dawn to dusk, but in looking off to the Savior."

Now that's what faith is. It is looking off to Jesus. And so most of the things we share on Sunday evenings are not to be taken by your mind and applied and hammered into your heart. They are to be given to the Holy Spirit who alone can apply them. He alone can make that division and it is important to make it. You'll see other reasons why it's important to make it. It's important for the spirit to gradually be divided from the soul and then for them to be rejoined in the right relationship. Because one of the problems you'll see in later Sunday evenings is that they are wrongly related. But there is only One that can do that and that One is mentioned in Hebrews 4:12.

No doubt many of those in psyche wards are there because really the body of Jesus has not realized or practiced this truth. So, they themselves are utterly in chaos because of the disorder of the relationship of their soul to their spirit. It's verse 12 of Hebrews 4. "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit." Now do you see that? And that helps anyone who might be tempted to say, " Oh I thought anytime the Bible mentioned spirit it meant soul and anytime it mentioned soul it meant spirit. I thought spirit and soul were the same."

No, do you see that there is a clear distinction there. "...Piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." The word of God alone, (who is really the sword of the Spirit) can give you revelation in certain moments when you may not be expecting it. He can give you revelation of times when your soul is out of order with your spirit. Even then it's been my experience that once I have received it, it was very important for me to not try and apply it by my mental memory. But to thank the Holy Spirit and to say, "Holy Spirit will you keep me clear of this in the future? Now you have revealed it to me will you keep me clear of it?" He knew fine well that it was not just a matter of my perception, but that my soul had become over strong in certain areas and he had to break that strength in me.

So that's the way it operates. The Holy Spirit, through the word of God, pierces you and reveals the intentions and desires of your heart so that you can say, "Oh, what soulishness! How much was I involved with just my mind and emotions or with myself?" And the Holy Spirit reveals that to you. But then in subsequent weeks and months he breaks that in you. We love to think it's just a matter of perceiving and we can do it. It's not. Usually the soul has grown overly in some area and needs to be broken of some strength. But that's the way it works. It doesn't work through us doing it ourselves.

May I just point out to you the way that God created us in the beginning? You find it in Genesis 2:7.
"Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." Maybe I could just show you some of the important words in that verse that we have read so often. "Then the Lord God formed man from dust from the ground." Actually the word for dust is “aphar” and the word for ground is “adamah”. (It becomes Adam). But God made us of the ground and that is the "body" part of us. He took dust and made our bodies. Then he breathed into man's nostrils “the breath of lives”. Because actually the Hebrew is “chay” and it always means the plural. So it is not “life” in the singular but “the breath of lives”. And the word for “breath” in that verse is the word “ruah”. That is the same word for “spirit”.

You can see what the Father did. He took our bodies and he breathed into them the spirit and then man became a living being and the King James is right there rather than the Revised Standard Version (RSV) because the word is “nephesh” and that means “soul”. So God took dust of the ground and made man's body. He breathed into it his “ruah”, his spirit, and man became a living soul. That's why often the Bible uses soul in two ways. Often it refers to man as a soul. You remember in Revelation for instance they talk about the souls of the dead. Soul is what makes man unique. Animals have bodies. Angels have spirits. But man is unique in that he has a soul. The soul is the unique part of man. It is actually the part that gives him his individuality and gives woman her personality. It's the part where the two mix. It's like taking water and putting powder into it and the result is instant coffee.

And so the two are blended perfectly together. That was the way it was at the beginning of the garden of Eden. All three were blended perfectly. It is interesting as you read some of the books by Andrew Murray and William Law and books like “God's Life in the Soul of Man”, you'll find that they attach all our problems to a disorder in the relationship to these three things inside us. Salvation is those three things coming into the right order.

In the beginning they were perfectly blended. God put his Spirit into man and man became a living soul. He was then capable of union with God. It is good for us to see too that God's Spirit is separate from our spirit. Do you see that? When God gave us his Spirit that spirit remained. It didn't always remain in contact with God or related to God or was alive to God. But that spirit remains and we all have spirits. Jean Dixon has a spirit. Hitler had a spirit. The dangerous thing about the loved ones in the Mormon church is that they have spirits. It is the spirit in them that is dangerous. Their doctrine is dangerous but the most dangerous thing is the demon of error that operates in them. That's why when we talk about people who are in willful disobedience and in willful error in the sects we say to keep clear of them. Don't even talk with them. It's not that you might be overcome by their arguments. It's because they have entertained an evil spirit of error within them. Their spirit is possessed by that and you can actually come away with some of that attached to your spirit if you are not resisting and standing in Jesus against it. So, all of us have spirits but our spirit is separate from God's Spirit.

It might be good to look at a verse that teaches that plainly. It's Romans 8:16. It's one of the assurance verses. You get the distinction there. "It is the Spirit himself bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God." You see the capital "S" in Spirit with the article - the Spirit.
But then where it says “our spirit” there is no article. It is just the word spirit. The first Spirit is always the Holy Spirit of God whenever the Greek word has the article [the] in front of it. Whenever it hasn't the article it means our spirit.

It's good for you to see that there is the Holy Spirit of God who is unique and then all of us who have spirits. When we are not children of God our spirits are dead to Him. Of course the real danger is that they can be alive to all kinds of other things. That's why there is such a plethora of spiritism and spiritualism in our day. The materialism has become so oppressive that our spirits feel more and more squashed to death and crushed. So, there is a great hunger in even the spirits of absolute pagans here in our western world. There is a great hunger. There is in fact even in them a rejection and reaction against materialism. They find that it doesn't matter how much they own they still have an emptiness inside and their spirits demand some kind of life. Then they go to the kind of life that Satan and his angels produce in spiritualism and séances. There is a great deal of bad and evil spiritual life in our world as well as the spiritual life that comes from the Holy Spirit. It's important for us to see that.

Let's go right to the final comments and finish there. One of the beautiful analogies to our personality that the Bible gives is found in 1 Corinthians 6:19. "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? " In other words the body is really just an enclosure for the spirit within. It is interesting just to look at the whole idea of your personality as the temple of God. It does provide some light on the different parts of our personality.

The temple in the Old Testament had a "Holy of Holies" and it had an Outer Court. Then it had thirdly a place that was designated the Holy Place. The Outer Court was a public place there you could see plainly because it was daylight. It was really like your body. You have no trouble seeing what the hand is doing or the fingers are doing or the feet are doing. You can see what your body is doing. It's a plain and open thing that you can see with your own eyes and observe or hear or taste.

The Holy Place was within and yet there was the light of the candles. And there were some other things in that Holy Place, so that you could see it. The priests were allowed to go in and out of there. You couldn't see quite so plainly because it wasn't daylight but you could still see. And it is interesting that your soul is a place that you can look into and see. You can look into the soul where the mind is and you can perceive thoughts. I can reflect on my thoughts. You can look into your feelings and see what you are feeling. So, the Holy Place is a place that you can see, not quite so clear as seeing your body, but you can still see.

The Holy of Holies was absolutely dark because it was the place where God dwelt. There was no light there because he provided all the light that was needed. Any everything that went on in there went on by faith. The people simply believed that God was there. They simply believed that God was there in the Holy of Holies. And everything that went on in the Holy Place and in the Outer Court was directed by what went on in the Holy of Holies. Yet what went on there no one actually knew. They believed God to be working there and operating.

If you would grasp that with all of your being you would stop this business of trying to look in to see how you are doing with God. Because the answer is you cannot. The priest alone went in here once a year. No one else went in and only the priest. Only the Holy Spirit can go into your Holy of Holies. That's why you are absolutely dependent on what he says to you when He comes out. You are. That's why it is so important when the Holy Spirit speaks to you and says, "Do this", that you should do it. He knows fine well that from what he has seen in here with your relationship with God, if you do this thing that he tells you, God will be able to fill a new place in your life.

All you can do is obey blindly the directions of the Holy Spirit. You can always check those directions against his Word that he has written. You can always check that your directions are consistent with his Word. You can always confirm it with other brothers and sisters who also have contact with the Holy Spirit. But you yourself cannot see in there. If you are going to have God working in your life it has to be by faith. You have to exercise faith that God has done what he said he'd do.

He stood at the door and knocked. "If any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come into Him and sup with him and he with me." You have to accept by faith that he has come in and that he is working there. As the High Priest, the Holy Spirit will go in and out of your spirit. He'll check out how the works are and then he'll come out and tell you what you need to do. You see the chaos that you and I get into when we treat the words of the Holy Spirit lightly. That's where we get into problems. If you say, "I have trouble with the presence of God in my life", the only thing you can do about it is to obey what the Holy Spirit is telling you to do in your outward life. Then if you do that you can trust and believe absolutely that God is completely at home inside your spirit. You can trust him to send out from your spirit whatever kind of love, or joy or peace that you need.

Remember the picture of the temple. No one could see what went on there. Only God's Spirit could and God himself. You can't see what is in your spirit. So when you get worried about God's presence in your life because you can't feel him it's ridiculous. If you get worried because you can't feel God in your life it's like you are asking me, "What is a square circle?" You can't feel God in your life and everybody knows that. You can feel God in your soul if he is sending up some happy feelings or if he isn't. But often he doesn't send up happy feelings. Often he knows that it's time for you to walk a bit by faith.

Sometimes he does grant you consolations - great joy and great peace. But very often as you move on deeper with him in your life together he sends up no happy feelings. He develops more and more your absolute faith. So that, for instance, if a time should ever come where you would be in a prison and tortured beyond the point of physical endurance, your spirit would remain strong in God. You might not even know it was strong but it would be strong. The Holy Spirit would be able to keep it strong through the years that you had exercised.

So loved ones it's that kind of situation that you are going to come into if you are going to be used by God. It's not necessarily torture or prison camp. But you are going to come into situations where your spirit has to have absolute rock-like stability -- untouched by your body and soul. The only way that that can be wrought in you is by the work of the Holy Spirit. And he can only work if every time he comes outside that door and says to you, " One glass of Coke is enough," or he says, "That's enough looking, that's enough", you stop.

Or he says to you, "Tomorrow morning, 6 AM, pray." Or he says to you, "You give this money to this person." Or he says to you, "You fill in your income tax completely this time." Whatever the Holy Spirit says to you, you have to do it exactly. It's not even in my hands to mellow it for you. I can't even make it easier for you. I know that God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey him. The Holy Spirit alone can make God real in your spirit and keep your spirit alive if you will obey him every time he comes out and gives you directions and commands.

So that's the kind of outline of our personality that God gives us in the Bible. That's the kind of plan that he has for the relationship between them. Next Sunday I'd like to deal in detail with the difference between our spirits and our souls and the different functions of our spirits and the different functions of our souls. I would ask you to pray and ask the Holy Spirit. "What is there in this for me tonight?" Not - "Holy Spirit what was Pastor trying to say?” but “Holy Spirit what is there in this for me tonight?" I'm sure as I gave some of those illustrations the Holy Spirit spoke to you about something. Commit yourself this moment to obedience and you'll have no trouble with what is going on in there. That is not your business. Your business is obeying the High Priest who will keep things right in your spirit. Because he alone can touch your spirit and he'll touch it on one condition, that you'll obey him. It's a beautiful, simple life. It never gets much deeper than "Trust and obey for there's no other way." Let's pray.

Lord Jesus, thank you that however deep we may go in the understanding of your truths they all come down to a very simple gospel – “trust and obey, for there's no other way, to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.” And Lord thank you that we don't need to understand the world of theology in order to do that. We know your voice, Holy Spirit. We've heard your voice in our consciences a thousand times and we know you know you've spoken to us about some things even now. We know that if we obey you on those that you will take care of that part of us that we cannot touch - our spirits - the part of us that contacts our God. Holy Spirit we see that our soul can deal with "ourselves" and our body can deal with the world but only our spirits perceive God. You alone can make those spirits alive so that they can be rightly related to our Father. We would commit ourselves to obeying you so that you will keep us rightly related to God in Jesus our Savior. Now the grace of our Lord Jesus and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with each one of us now and evermore. Amen.

HOW TO STOP SINNING

HOW TO STOP SINNING

There are just four important steps.

FIRST, BE CLEAR IN YOUR OWN MIND WHAT SIN IS

This will keep you free from false condemnation. God states clearly His own definition of sin in James 4:17: "Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin." You sin, then, when you consciously and deliberately reject what you know is God's will and refuse to do it. Sin is conscious disobedience to the will of God; the conviction of the Holy Spirit and a true sense of guilt is felt only after conscious, intentional disobedience to God's will.
What Sin Is Not

There is an unscriptural definition of sin around that has created much false guilt. It's the philosophical idea that sin is any deviation from absolute right -- any lack of conformity to the perfect image of God -- whether we are aware of it or not! This would mean that we sin all the time in act, word and thought. There will be a hundred ways in which we fall short of God's perfection every day without knowing it.

If this is sin, then according to I John 3:8, we will all be children of the devil forever. But this is not the Biblical definition of sin; this is just a humble, creaturely consciousness that there must be much of our Creator's nature and will which He has not yet been able to reveal to us. If you label this sense of your humanity sin, then you will always be experiencing vague guilt feelings that are tied to no act or word in particular. This is false condemnation and is caused by Satan's obscuring the teaching of the Bible. When the Holy Spirit convicts of sin, He points out clearly and precisely some act, word, or thought you knew at the time was contrary to God's will.

SECOND, DEAL WITH YOUR GUILT
If you tell a lie to cover up some missed assignment or commitment, the Holy Spirit convicts you of sin, your conscience registers guilt, and Satan accuses you of rebellion against the Creator. If we argue with God about whether it was sin or not, we find ourselves trying to justify our own actions before Him. This is impossible as God has said in Romans 3:28 that "no man is justified by works of the law." This self-justification is itself sin and creates more guilt in our conscience. If we look to Satan and try to rationalize our actions, he simply points to our emotions which express the depression of our guilty conscience, and we become utterly demoralized. This guilt and sense of inadequacy drains a person of any dynamic desire to try again. That is why God has provided the answer for our guilt.

What Do You Do When You Have Sinned?

Admit it, be honest: call sin, sin. See sin for what it is -- a spear in Jesus' side: this is confession. Now pull the spear out of Jesus' side -- turn from the sin, resolve that it will have no place in your life again: this is repentance. Turn your eyes to the fact of Christ's death; see that He died the death that you should have died for your sin (Romans 5:8). Accept that we are "reconciled to God by the death of His Son" (Romans 5:10). If you truly believe this and bend all your being towards keeping that spear out of Jesus' side, then your faith (belief plus obedience) will be "reckoned to you as righteousness" (Rom. 4:22), and God will accept you back again into fellowship with Himself.

Answer Satan in the same way. Do not be morbid and look at your emotions; simply point to the preciousness of the blood of Christ to God (I Peter 1:18-19) and remind Him that this is the only basis for God's accepting you at all. It is not your obedient life, for all our "righteousness is as filthy rags"; it is not your ability to live the victorious Christian life. It is simply your readiness to listen to the Holy Spirit that enables "the blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse you from every sin" (I John 1:7). Then with your heart "sprinkled clean from an evil conscience" (Heb. 10:22), let Jesus take over your life again.

THIRD, DEAL WITH THE POWER OF SIN
You have received Jesus as your Savior: then you are a child of God (John 1:12); therefore, there will grow in you a desire to please your Father, to stop crucifying Jesus in your life by further sins, and to allow Him to be your Lord. Many have seen the promise in the Bible that Jesus would not only save them in their sin but from their sins (Romans 6:7, 12-14; Colossians 3:5-10; I John 2:3-6; 3:4-10, 24; 5:2-5,18). However, they may try to do it by their own willpower, by the method of gradual growth, by trying hard. This simply leads to despair and defeat. There is another way!

As we are freed from the guilt of sin by faith in the effect of the blood of Christ, so we are freed from the power of sin by faith in the effect of the cross of Christ. Just as Christ's own death for us came as a revelation that constituted a new experience, so Christ's death in us comes as a revelation that constitutes a new experience. As we exercise a daily faith in the ability of Christ's blood to take away the guilt of our sin, so we exercise a daily faith in Christ's cross to take away the power of sin. The power of sin can only be lessened by our own "trying hard"; it can be broken by faith in what happened to us on the cross.

The reason we tell a lie about a missed assignment is that we believe deep down in our innermost being that we have every right to behave in whatever way will be to our advantage. It is this inner attitude that relentlessly forces us to manipulate people and God's commandments. It is this inward sin, this unsurrendered "I", this feeling that I am God, this right I have to myself and my own way, that makes me reject God's will, disobey His commandments, harden my heart, and sear my conscience. All of this was crucified with Christ 1900 years ago (Romans 6:6): all of this is simply self -- the real you.

This is a fact -- this has happened to you positionally in Christ in the first century. Now will you allow the Holy Spirit to bring it about actually in the twentieth century? Christ's blood will pay for your sins as long as your heart is soft enough to repent and believe, but you can live above conscious disobedience to God's will by faith in your common funeral with Christ (Romans 6:1-4) and submission to His Holy Spirit (John 16:13).

Are you in despair about overcoming sin in your life? Have you come to the end of yourself? Then let the Holy Spirit reveal to you that when Christ died with all His rights, you died with all your rights. He died to His future, you died to your future; when He died to Himself as a private person, you died to yourself as a private person; when He died to doing anything more on earth for God, you died to yourself doing anything more on earth for God. Now, will you allow the Holy Spirit to make this real in your life? It is not enough to know it intellectually: the Holy Spirit alone can make it effectual in you now and every day in your life, as you set your mind on the past fact of your death with Christ and submit your will to the present fact of the Holy Spirit in your life.

FOURTH, GROW IN GRACE
The deepest part of you has been cleansed by faith (Acts 15:9). This means that your spirit is pure and free from that rebellious desire to have your own way. However, though your intentions are now wholly directed to God's glory, yet they have to express themselves through a soul that still shares the effects of the fall of man. Thus your mind is impaired and mars the expression of your perfect love for God by its mistakes and its ignorance. Your emotions are unbalanced and will inadequately express your settled contentment with God's will for you by unintentional deviations from Christ-like peace. Your body is weakened and will at times adversely affect the ability of your mind and emotions to express your spirit's true desire.

Moreover, we live in an anti-Christ, pro-self world infested with spirits of evil, so we are never free from temptation that expresses itself in thoughts and feelings of evil. These become evil thoughts and evil feelings the moment we decide from our spirits to think of them a second time or to feel them a second moment. All of these are sins only if they express the real attitude of our spirits; that is, if they come from without -- from the prince of this world --and we reject them as alien and unnatural to our spirits; we do not sin.

Nevertheless, God wants us to purify our souls (I Peter 1:22): growth in grace is simply allowing the purity of our spirit to spread throughout our mind, our emotions, and body so that they are integrated and fully fitted to express the will of the Holy Spirit in our spirits. The purity in our spirit comes by faith; maturity in our souls comes by growth in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. This grace comes through the Spirit's revelation and the breaking experiences of life.
Finally, only the Holy Spirit can tell if a person has sinned. Only He knows if it was a conscious disobedience of God's will by the person's spirit. If a man does not defend his own sins and is open to the Holy Spirit's light, then God's promise is "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin" (I John 1:7). But what if a person in an emergency does sin? Then as John says: "My little children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin; but if any one does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." (I John 2:1)

Summary of Ephesians 1:1-14: In Christ

Summary of Ephesians 1:1-14:   In Christ

Will you take the Bible please, and look at Ephesians?  We need to summarize again what is a wonderful benediction in these twelve verses of the first half of the first chapter in Ephesians and it begins with “Blessed be the God and Father.”  And they talk about that in the next twelve verses as the benediction.  It is possibly the most remarkable sentence in the English language, because it covers from infinity-to-infinity.  Really, God himself – we dare not say where he fits in, or where is his beginning, but if you take a timeline and divide it even into three areas, and you talk about that as in some way the beginning (indicating a section of a line drawn on a white board) and you talk about this as in some way the beginning of the earth, and then this of course as in some way the beginning of life, the life for which we were made.  And then you talk about this more or less as Genesis 1, however many years ago that was, the creation of the earth.  And then you begin to look at this time, this infinite time before then and though it’s silly to talk about the beginning of eternity, yet if you think of what God did away at the beginning, and you think of him begetting his own Son Christ, and at that same moment in Christ creating mankind, and then at that same moment foreseeing the fall of man, and at that same moment seeing the crucifixion that was necessary of his son, and at that same moment the resurrection, and the new creation of man.  Then in fact, right through, if that is 29 AD, and right through the cross, these twelve verses stretch right from there to there.

It’s an amazing sentence and it’s very compact and you yourself know the complexity of it as we studied it, and you’d know even more the complexity of the Greek if you read it in the Greek, but they are a remarkable twelve verses.  They are a remarkable series of sentences that cover not just time, which would be between there and there, but eternity from the beginning to the end.  And so there are probably no set of sentences like it in English and better than any other twelve verses in the Bible that I know as it outlines the whole account of reality right from beginning to end.  And in a sense you can think of verses three to six in a way being the past.

This isn’t quite true literally, but in a sense you can think of those as being the past and then seven to ten as being the present, and then the other verses eleven to fourteen as being the future.  But these are my suggestions, and you can see that in a sense it breaks down, because in a sense it’s all concerned with the past.  And that’s I think, one of the big reliefs that came to me. I used to read this verse “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,” and I’d think, “Yes, God is so good, he has given us everything and now in Jesus, now that I’m a Christian, I have been given, in Christ, everything.  And I am so grateful to you Lord, for that.”  If Satan ever got in and made me wonder if I was a Christian or not, then of course, suddenly everything fell apart.  “All hell done broke loose” because if I wasn’t a Christian than this hadn’t happened.  Then of course, I have not been blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing.

In other words, there was a time when I certainly would have taken these past tenses as a personal statement of what had happened to me when I made my decision for Christ.  So, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has now blessed me in Christ, with every spiritual blessing.  Now that I’ve become a Christian I’m blessed with that.  Now if I’m not a Christian of course, that isn’t so.”  And so it was a wonderful revelation when I saw that this past is objective reality; this is not an expression just of my own subjective experience, this is an objective reality.  This has happened.  Whether I believe it or not, this has happened.  So this is a fact of reality and that was a great relief and revelation to me.  And obviously it brings home to you too, as it does to me, what many people say, “Karl Barth is the messenger of grace.”  It brings home to you God’s infinite grace.  “You mean, in here where we were crucified with Christ in the lamb slain from before the foundation of the world Hitler was there?”  And of course, while we’re interested in Hitler it comes home to you, “You mean I was there and each one of us was there?  That we were crucified with Christ, that we were resurrected with him that we have been made a new creation and that God regards us as his own child?”

That suddenly brings home to you, where does grace stop if God does that kind of thing?  If he has that attitude and bears all of us inside his son Jesus, and all our wretched irritability, and our stupid pride, and at times our cruelty and savagery, if he has borne all that for all of us, and then not only that but sees it worked out moment-by-moment, second-by-second, drop of blood from the cross, by drop of blood. And then by the persecutions of Nero through all the little children and the mothers, and husbands that were killed in lion arenas, and then through the persecutions of the middle ages, and then on, and on and on and he endures all that in his own son, all the agony and the torture, not only of the Roman soldier that killed the Christian, but of the Christian that was killed.  And he bears all that and still says, “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden.”  And then says, “Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.”  That he does that kind of thing and he’s doing that now and will do it right up until we begin that new life, that’s what these verses are saying.  And that of course is grace that is so overwhelming that what can an ordinary sane person do but fall down prostrate on the ground and say, “Father whatever you want, whatever you want here I am.”

So that’s loved ones, what is the heart of these verses and they all light up when you see it like that, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  At three o’clock this morning I wakened saying that, because I realized that’s all our life should be.  Our lives should be constantly, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual gift, with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”  That’s what our life should be like.  We should be walking along day-by-day, crying out, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord.”  We should, there’s nothing else to do.  There’s nothing else for us to do but to do that, to rejoice everyday and to be saying that, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,” because all of that has already taken place.  He has done that.  He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing; love, joy, peace he has put in our hearts, he has formed them in us in Christ, he has imparted to us Christ himself with all his joy and love and peace, his spiritual blessings are ours.  All we have to do is let them out, they’re there.

We have little inklings that they’re there; sometimes you have a little joy, sometimes you have a little surprising love for someone, you find sympathy and a pity rising up in your heart that surprises you, that’s Christ that is inside you that is trying to get out.  And so that’s what it means, “Has already blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”  The heavenly places are these pre-creation moments maybe billions of years ago and of course when we get to heaven we’ll find they were just a second ago, but it’s those, in heavenly places.  “Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world,” and that’s the wonder of it.  The formation of the world is there, but he chose us even before the foundation of the world.  He chose us in Christ.  He said, “You will be mine in my son.  You will be part of my son.  I have chosen you in my son to be part of me and my family even before the foundation of the world.”

“That we should be holy and blameless before him,” because the only way we could be holy and blameless is if we had Christ around us and in us and we were drowned in Christ.  “He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ.”  That’s it back there.  He destined us back there in love and in sheer grace.  He destined, he planned, he predestined, he projected, and he arranged that we would be his sons through Jesus.  There’s no other way to be his sons, you see.  Can’t be a son out here and be adopted into Christ, you can only be adopted in Christ into the family, but it’s in Christ that you are adopted.  So it’s in him that you’re his sons.

“He destined us in love to be his son through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace.”  Again, just sheer grace which he freely bestowed on us in the beloved.  And see loved ones that was before you and I were ever born, before we did anything.  That’s why it says in other parts of scripture, “Even while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  Before we were ever born, God bestowed his love upon us in the beloved.  That’s back there, he did it then.

“In him,” in verse 7 and then this kind of comes to the present, but in a sense you can see it also looks forward to the future.  “In him we have redemption through his blood.”  In other words we are brought back to what we are originally created in him.  We were created in Christ as part of mankind, and we were made to be like him, but then we fell, and then he destroyed us in Christ, raised us up in Christ, made us a new creation, redeemed us back to what were.  And so in him we have redemption now through, “The forgiveness of our trespassers according,” again, “according to the riches of his grace.”

It may be important to say that again to you; you have the forgiveness of your sins not because you have been conscientious in your repentances. You have the manifestation of the new birth because of your repentance, but you don’t win the forgiveness of your sins by your good repentance.  We have the forgiveness of our sins back here.  Back here God saw Marty, he saw Ernest O’Neil back here, and he saw us for what we were, and he saw the miserable little creatures that we became and back there he forgave us our sins, and he put us in Christ and he resurrected us.  So the forgiveness of sins is based on that objective reality.  Now our experience of that is based on our faith, on our acceptance of it.

“According to the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us.  For he has made known to us in all wisdom.”  Now he has made known to us in that wisdom and insight, the mystery of his will.  The mystery of his will was this whole plan here you see, to make man in Christ, to bear man’s sin in his son, and then to destroy man in Christ, and in the process of course, to destroy the Savior, and then to resurrect him, and resurrect man in Christ, and make the new creation.  That’s the purpose of his will.  “According to his purpose which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in heaven and things on earth.”  Because his plan was that this dear Christ would unite everything in himself.  He would bring all this over here, and he would unite it all in himself in the new heaven, in the new earth.

And then the verse 11 looks to the future, “In him, according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will.”  So through these years he’s accomplishing all things according to the counsel of his will.  That’s why for us there is no worry or no concern or anxiety about the way the world is going because we know God is accomplishing the purpose of his will in it all.  He foresaw all this, and he knows the ways it’s all going, and he is accomplishing what he planned.  “Accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will, we who first hoped in Christ have been destined and appointed to live for the praise of his glory.  In him you also, who have heard the word of truth,” this explanation of reality, “The gospel of your,” deliverance the good news of your deliverance, “of your salvation, and have believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, which is now the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”  And so we find ourselves somewhere here.  We don’t know how close to that point in the timeline, but somewhere here we are.  And there we are destined to live to the praise of his glory, and we have here the Holy Spirit as a guarantee that all this is going to come real for us in just a very few seconds really, just a few seconds.  Let’s pray.

THE CURE FOR AN EVIL HEART (Genesis 6 & 7)

Sermon Transcript

I think it is possible to come each Sunday and still feel in your heart: But what does God want of me? What does God want of me? What really is the heart of this gospel that we're talking about and what is the response God wants from me to it? So that's what today's verse explains, loved ones.

Before talking about the gospel, it might be good to establish clearly what the basic problem is in God's eyes. It's important to do that because it's very different from the basic problem that is so often discussed or highlighted by sociologists, by magazine and newspaper writers, even by the authors of inspirational books. Most of them seem to zero in on "mankind's greatest problem is guilt -- a sense of guilt". Or "the twentieth century's greatest difficulty is loneliness." Or "man's great problem today is a loss of self-esteem."

Well really God alone can see what mankind's greatest problem is because he alone is not part of that problem and his diagnosis is very different from all of those, loved ones, so would you look at it with me. It's in Genesis 6:5. Genesis 6:5, "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." That's what our maker says is our greatest problem. "The wickedness of man is great on the earth and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart is only evil continually" and then if you want to find the solution that God had for that just look about two verses down to verse 7. "So the Lord said, 'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the ground, man and beast and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." You know us with our soft hearts; we like to think they are and in our woolly mindedness we say there has to be some other solution besides that. Of course our error today is that we think there are all kinds of other solutions you know, besides the one that God found. God saw that the evil in our hearts was continual and he determined he would blot it out, he would destroy us.

Our error today is we think we can find some other answer. Just hold it, give me time, give me time and I'll find another answer. Now, if we have some encouragement from our peers that will kind of do it. Or if we can tame this evil or we can train it, or we can treat it in some way. Loved ones, that's why we end up with such a mixture of grays in our society today. You know that. We don't have any blacks or whites. We don't have any rights or wrongs. It's interesting -- as a result we don't actually have any reliable hearts that are trustworthy, isn't that so? That's the funny thing. We're so easy on the evil that is here and we attempt to ameliorate it in so many unsatisfactory ways that we end up with a world where it's very hard to find a trustworthy heart or a reliable heart. Now, of course, God kept on saying the same thing for two thousand years. He kept on saying, look there's only one answer to this. There is only one answer.

Jeremiah said it you know; he said "the sinful soul it must die." Paul said it years later when he said, "the wages of sin is death." The only way to get rid of this stuff is to destroy it. You cannot separate the sinner from his sin. You have to destroy both to get rid of it. Really, years later it was one of his prophets that said the same thing. "The real evil in the world is, the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it?" That's it, loved ones.

For two thousand years, God kept on saying that through his prophets. The basic problem of mankind is that the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Who can know it? The only answer to it is to destroy, to destroy. You remember that's exactly what God did if you look at Genesis 7:19. "And the waters prevailed so mightily upon the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered; the waters prevailed above the mountains covering them fifteen cubits deep. And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, birds, cattle, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm upon the earth, and every man; everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the air; they were blotted out from the earth." The reason was that immediately we began to try to live without trusting our creator to show us why he put us here. The moment we did that, the moment we decided we are not going to trust him to tell us that. We're not going to depend upon him. We're going to depend upon ourselves, that moment we became overwhelmingly fearful. We did loved ones. There was no other way; there was no way, which could have avoided it. Suddenly we realized I'm one of billions of people spinning through space on a sphere that has no visible means of support. This is madness. No wonder we were filled with a neurosis of insecurity and fearfulness. You know immediately that happened, we began to try to deal with our insecurity and we started to grab everything we could as fast as we could. At the same time trying to prevent anybody from knowing that that's what we were doing. So of course we were all doing that.

We were all like fearful neurotic little kids grabbing everything we could, grabbing all the money we could, all the possessions we could and at the same time trying to let nobody else know that we were doing it. So the whole relationships of the whole world were filled with dishonesty and deception and greed and avarice. Actually there wasn't a part of our personalities that was left untainted by that. Really, the theologians call it total depravity. It means, that while there was still a little life from God in the center of our beings, there was not one part of our personalities, not one part of our bodies, not one part of our minds, our emotions, or our wills that were not tainted with selfishness. This great disease that we developed within us once we stopped depending upon God, that's what total depravity means. It means that there isn't one part of you or one part of me that is not touched in some way with selfishness. So our hearts were filled with envy and hatred and anger and violence and resentment and criticism. God looked at that mess and he determined there is only one way to deal with it, "I will destroy it" and that's what he did. Now is that the gospel? No, it's part of the gospel. The gospel actually begins in that verse that we were reading if you look at it. It's Genesis 7:23. The Bible runs, "He blotted out every living thing that was upon the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the air; they were blotted out from the earth." Then the second half of the verse is the beginning of the gospel, "Only Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark." That's the beginning of the gospel.

It continues in Genesis 9:8, "Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 'Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.' And God said, 'This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations; I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will look upon it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.' God said to Noah, 'This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.'"

That's the gospel. That God determined he would never again destroy us all like that. Why? Because he thought that there was some other way to destroy sin? Loved ones, there is only one way to destroy guilt and that's destroy sin. There is only one way to destroy the sin and that's to destroy the sinner. But God found another way to destroy the sinner. He found a way to free us from our evil hearts that are so desperately wicked and deceitful without destroying us physically. How did he do it? Christ died for us. Christ was the flood. God put our hearts into the flood and destroyed them there. That's it. When he cried out, it was because he had your heart in himself and he was feeling the pain of its destruction. That's it.

You remember the way Paul put it? He said in Galatians 2:20 you remember, "I have been crucified with Christ and this is no longer I that live but Christ that lives within me." That's it. God took your heart and my heart and put it into his son and instead of flooding us out physically as he had done originally, he put us into the flood of Christ and he destroyed our evil deceitful wicked hearts in his son Jesus. That's what baptism meant in the first century. When a person was immersed, that's what the Greek word means, it means to be immersed in Christ. When you were immersed in the water as you went down you realized that you were being cut off from the world that you knew. As far as you were concerned when you were under that water there was no world and you were cut off from it. You were dead. When you came up out of the water, you then were given a Christian name. A new name because you were being raised in Jesus as a new creation and that's what God did instead of sending a flood. He destroyed our evil hearts in Jesus and recreated us with new hearts in his resurrection. There's an interesting verse, I don't know if you've ever noticed it in Peter that makes that truth clear. It's 1 Peter 3:20. It's talking about what Jesus did when he was raised or between his death and resurrection. Then in verse 20, "to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this," you see to the ark and the flood "now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." Jesus is the flood.

What does God want us to do? Well loved ones, it's Romans 12:1. It's really simple. "I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God." To do what? "To present your bodies as a living sacrifice", that's it. As if you had gone to a specialist with some pains in your abdomen and he had diagnosed cancer, cancer throughout the whole of your body. There isn't an organ in your body that is not touched with cancer. So you have at the most six weeks to live. That's what God says about our sin and our selfishness and the evil within us. You know what you say to the doctor. You say, "can you do anything?" He says the only hope is radiation, massive doses of radiation. You know what you say. You say, "what do you want me to do?"

He says you come here, you lie on that table and you allow us to give you massive doses of radiation. You don't cavil. You don't hesitate. You don't debate. You don't say would exercise do it instead? If I eat a little more or take a little more care of myself or if I obey certain rules and laws, will that do it? Or would it be enough if I just put my arm under the radiation? You know what you do. You present your body. You just say, "whatever you say. Whatever you want, you do. I'm going to be dead in six weeks anyway. If you can do anything for me, you do what you want." That's what God says except that it is a bit more poignant -- his appeal to us -- because Jesus has already borne the radiation. That's it. He has already borne the death destroying rays of God's wrath that were leveled upon you and me in him. When he cried out, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" It was because he felt all the destruction of that burning wrath of God destroying your selfish heart in him. So actually Christ has already borne that for you.

That's what that verse you remember in Corinthians means, "God made him to be sin who knew no sin." God made Christ what you are or what you were and then he destroyed that in his own son. So when you plead, well is there some other way? There is a dear person who has already borne the pain for you. Here you are saying, well maybe I don't need to put that arm into the flood. Maybe I don't need to put this mind or this part of my brain or this part of my life into the flood. Maybe I can get away without that part being destroyed. It's pitiful, isn't it?

Hamlet once said, "Oh what a rogue and peasant slave am I" when he saw the agony of an actor over the imagined death of his father and he thought my father is really dead and I feel none of that. Oh what a rogue and peasant slave are we if we stand back now and say is there some way in which I can get away from presenting my body, my whole body, my whole personality, my whole life for God to make this real in me. Well, it's after the fact, isn't it? The dear guy has already died.

He's already borne the pain. Here we are, wanting to know can we hold onto something of what he died to destroy. Present as a sacrifice, that is, to regard yourself, your life in reality as slaughtered, already slaughtered in Jesus. That was the only thing God could do with you or me. That was the only thing we were worth. Slaughtering us. Regard our lives as slaughtered and destroyed so that only the smoke now is rising up to God. That's what it means to present your bodies as a living sacrifice. You put it on there, you say Lord you did this for me. Here I am. You make it real, see the fruits of your work and suffering and be satisfied, wherever you want. Do whatever you want with me. Here I am. I regard myself as already a dead man, already somebody who has been destroyed. I present myself to you and you raise up what you want because radioactivity destroys good cells as well as bad as you probably know. In order to be healed you have to be willing. Lord, you make the judgment. You decide what has to be taken from my life. You decide it. I'm not going to argue. You raise up what you want. That's why it means present your bodies as a living sacrifice. A sacrifice that has already been destroyed and that God will make alive again according to his own best judgment. That's what God wants of us loved ones. That's it.

"Parastaesai" is the verb, present. It is what is called in Greek the aorist, and the aorist is the part of the verb that expresses an instantaneous complete act. That's it, you do it, it's done. That's what it means. To present your bodies means not bit by bit not struggle by struggle, but now you present it. I see what you've done Lord. You've destroyed me in Christ, he is the flood, and here I am. There, that's only reality. Here I am. Make this real in whatever way you please. It's a definite act. That's why for many of us a decision for Christ has been a momentary instantaneous action, you see, that we've done at a service like this. We've just done it because it can be to present; to present your bodies that way is the final admission that there is no other way. That's what it means to actually become a child of God.

It's an admission that everything has to be changed in my life. Not just the things that I see wrong everything. It's an admission that you are willing to let everything be changed. That's what real repentance is. Real repentance is stating everything has to be destroyed and the whole thing has to be created anew. That's what presenting your body as a living sacrifice is. That's what God requires loved ones. That's what He wants of us. Not our efforts you know. Not our endless attempts at cooperation. Not all our trying but just our recognition that He destroyed us and remade us in His Son. That we've to mirror that and reflect that by presenting ourselves as people who have been destroyed, who only deserve to be destroyed and Lord you raise up in me whatever you want.
That's what God requires of us. A bit like the man who owned an old shack on the edge of town that a developer wanted to buy. The developer came to this man and the man of course thought the shack was worth maybe two thousand dollars at the most and the developer said I'll offer you twenty-five thousand for that. The man was overwhelmed. It was arranged that in a month's time he would move out and the developer would take over.

The man began to think to himself, this is ridiculous giving me twenty-five thousand for this place, it's not worth it. Well, I better take some of that money and at least make it look reasonable and so he began to go down to the hardware stores and he began to buy new windows and new nails and he began to work on the shack. He began to get paint and painted up and all that kind of thing so that in a month's time the shack was really a transformation as far as he was concerned.

Then the developer came that day and the guy of course couldn't make out what he was doing with that massive bulldozer on the road and he said to him, "Look isn't the house beautiful?" and the developer said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah it is thank you. Here's the twenty-five thousand" and the guy said, "What are you going to do with it?" He said, "Oh that bulldozer, I am going to bulldoze it right off the site. I just want the site you see I don't need the house." That's it. God doesn't need your house. He doesn't need your life. He doesn't. You may think - and I mean I think you're lovely -- and I think we're all great. Really it's nothing to God. God doesn't want that.

God has already determined there is nothing I can do with you as you are. I have to destroy you, bulldoze you right off the site and start again. That's what conversion is, you see. That's what faith in Christ's death is. That's what being baptized into Jesus is. That's it. It's a total and absolute admission: Lord I agree with your diagnosis of the problem. My heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. There is only one way to fix me up and that is do what You did in Noah's day, just destroy me absolutely and start again and make me what you want me to be.

That's what God wants from us, loved ones. Now you can do it this morning. I did it one day in Sunday school in Ireland one afternoon. It doesn't require a special evangelistic service. You can do it at this moment. You can and I would suggest that if you've never done that, if you've never given your life to God like that, for Him to do whatever He wants with and to make real in you the mighty destruction and salvation that He worked in you in Jesus. The miracle is already done you see. That's the miracle, it's already done. All you're doing this morning is saying, "Lord, that's what I want. What you have already done in me, that's what I want. Will you begin by your Holy Spirit to make it real from this day forward?" If you say that, honestly, loved ones, and are willing for him to touch whatever needs to be touched in your life, and to burn out whatever of cancer there is there, then this will be the beginning of eternal life for you. It's the beginning of your life

Let us pray: Dear God, I would ask you to listen to my brothers and sisters as they pray to you. Lord I know you will take us at our word. Thank you. Lord we would give you everything you see needs to be liberated. Everything that you see you have to destroy in Christ, we would give you it all. Now as you point the things out to us Lord we would not hold back. We would see that everything we give to you will be cleansed and will be made worthwhile and will be able to be used in this life. So Lord, we lay ourselves before you until you do with us what you want. We present our bodies to you as a living sacrifice, as something as far as we are concerned is no longer ours to use but is now done with. We no longer hope for anything from it. It is now burned on the altar. It is something that is finished with. Now Lord you do what you want with it. If you do care to raise any of it up, that is up to you. If you care to make any use of any of it, that is up to you. If meanwhile any happiness or peace should come to us, we'll be grateful but we will not at all demand it. We'll present our bodies as a living sacrifice to you this day and yield them to you forever.

Now the grace of our Lord Jesus and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with each one of us now and ever more. Amen.

Kingdom principles for growth

One of the growth principle of The Kingdom of God is to put into business.  We all know the parable of Talents.  The one who received five put it into business and gained another five.  The other who got 2 talents put it into business and gained another two.  But the one who received one talent hid it.  If you have the gift of prayer, pray and develop a strong prayer life.  You continue in prayer.  If you have the gift of healing, go out and heal others every day.  Put it into practice.  Pray the healing prayer and command the sickness to go in the name of Jesus Christ is the only way to grow in it.  If you are a preacher, preach whenever you get a chance to preach.  Put it into practice will develop your skill in whatever you do.  If you are in Evangelism, do it regularly.  This will develop your skill of evangelism very strong.  In spiritual life and in physical world this principle is applicable.
